City council signals support for stadium expansion "Hünting"
Higher requirements for possible promotion to third division
At its meeting on 14 February, the majority of Bocholt city council voted in favour of supporting the regional football league club 1. FC Bocholt with the expansion of the stadium at "Hünting". The council passed a resolution in principle to provide a grant of around €2.85 million. The money is intended to help expand the stadium to third division standard with a future capacity of at least 5,000 fans.
The entire stadium expansion is estimated at 6.5 million euros. The provision of the city's money is subject to conditions. The club is required to submit a financing plan.
The trigger is the team's current sporting success: 1. FC Bocholt is currently level on points with Alemannia Aachen at the top of the Regionalliga West table and has a chance of being promoted to the third division.
This would place increased infrastructural demands on the stadium. Not only would the spectator capacity have to be expanded, but better floodlights and pitch heating would also be required.
Bocholt's city council plans to revisit the issue on 6 March.
