Vote: Kreuzschule Mussum also becomes a community elementary school
Parents had voted // GSV Liebfrauen remains confessional school
This week, a vote was also held at the Mussum Kreuzschule and the Liebfrauen Elementary School Association on the question of whether the Catholic confessional schools should be converted into community elementary schools. A narrow majority of parents in Mussum voted in favor of conversion, while a clear majority of parents of pupils at GSV Liebfrauen were against conversion.
The decision in Mussum was extremely close: Of the 211 parents eligible to vote, 122 cast their ballots. 107 parents voted in favor of the conversion to a community elementary school, 15 against. The required majority of 106 votes was thus achieved by a very narrow margin (50.71 percent).
"Such a close result also shows how diverse school life and interests really are," says Mayor Thomas Kerkhoff. But "even close democratic results are legitimate," Kerkhoff said.
The result of the parents' survey for the Liebfrauen elementary school association is clearer. Here, only 99 of the 295 parents eligible to vote voted for the conversion into a community elementary school. (33.56 percent) A total of 119 parents had cast their vote, 20 of whom voted against the conversion.
In addition to the Kreuzschule Mussum and the GSV Liebfrauen, as reported, a vote had already been held at the end of March at the elementary school in Biemenhorst. There, 63.3 percent voted in favor of the conversion.
The further steps in the conversion process are now the responsibility of the school authorities, the school supervisory authority of the district of Borken and the district government in Münster.
