The 75th anniversary of the Basic Law has now been celebrated in Bocholt's Kinodrom cinema. The event was organised by Mariengymnasium. Numerous pupils were involved in the programme. NRW Minister President Hendrik Wüst gave a video greeting. At the same time, the school received a certificate for "20 Years School without Racism - School with Courage". The event was organised in cooperation with EUROPE DIRECT Bocholt.

Double anniversary

Mariengymnasium Bocholt has now celebrated a double anniversary. To mark the 75th anniversary of the Basic Law and the 20th anniversary of the award of the "School without Racism - School with Courage" seal of approval, a large ceremony was held in the Kinodrom, which was attended by Years 9, 10 and Q1. Bocholt's mayor Thomas Kerkhoff and the chairman of the Bocholt Integration Council, Juan Lopez Casanava, took part as keynote speakers. Together with headmistress Ruth Sonntag, they emphasised the importance of the Basic Law and its values, both in terms of fundamental and human rights and with regard to the upcoming European elections on 9 June.

The student working group "Ehrenamt" led by Verena Peltzer presented their diverse activities. After a video message from the Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hendrik Wüst, the certificate for the 20th anniversary of the "School without Racism - School with Courage" seal of approval was awarded.

Talk round

The event was rounded off by a panel discussion with Professor Andrea Walter, who conducts research at the University of Dortmund on the topic of "Volunteering", teacher Kathrin Rohleder, who grew up in the former GDR and therefore has a different perspective on the Basic Law, Juan Lopez Casanava and Mayor Thomas Kerkhoff. Pupils from class 10a moderated the talk. The moderation was organised under the direction of the Mariengymnasium's European representative, Sven Volmering. Class 10c created a musical framework with songs.

After the ceremony, all pupils in Years 5-8 received a copy of the Basic Law.

"The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU is also about protecting people's fundamental rights. It is therefore worth defending them and going to the polls on 9 June", emphasised Sonja Wießmeier from EUROPE DIRECT Bocholt.
