"A whole day for peace": Pupils' work is exhibited at Hohe Giethorst School

Initiative "School without Racism" // Grades 5 to 10

Creativity meets democracy education: A very special one-day workshop took place as part of the "School without Racism" initiative and the VHS First Voter Project. Under the title "A whole day for peace", 24 pupils from years 5 to 10 artistically explored topics such as peace and emancipatory processes.

The event kicked off with a lecture by Dr Torsten Caeners on the history and significance of classic superhero comics. Afterwards, artist Anna Aimée guided the pupils in putting their own ideas for peace processes on paper.

Immediately after the workshop, all participants received a magazine with the resulting drawings. In addition, a framed canvas was produced with the support of the Municipal Integration Centre, combining selected works into a large-format work of art. This canvas has now been officially handed over to the Hohe Giethorst School and is on permanent display there from now on.

The First City Councillor of Bocholt, Björn Volmering, and Isabel Testroet, Director of VHS Bocholt-Rhede-Isselburg, presented the artwork to the school's pupils on their behalf. In his speech, Volmering recognised the commitment of the participants and thanked teacher Mehmet Turan for his initiative. "Creative processes like this are an important part of democracy education and show how diversity and cohesion can be actively promoted", said the First City Councillor.

The exhibition at Hohe Giethorst School now invites visitors to discover the creative results of the young artists and be inspired by their messages of peace.
