If you live in a flat whose shortcomings cannot be remedied by adapting it or which you have to give up for another reason, you should check whether you might be able to move into a senior citizens' flat.

The location, size and furnishings are suitable for the elderly. However, not all flats are equipped for the disabled. The publicly subsidised senior citizens' flats are intended for people who have reached the age of 60. In the case of couples, one partner must fulfil this requirement.

Housing entitlement certificates

As a rule, you will need a residence entitlement certificate for the flats. If you fulfil the requirements, you can obtain this from the city of Bocholt.

Most people want to live independently in familiar surroundings and in contact with others, even in old age. However, the onset of the need for assistance and care makes living conditions in the existing home more difficult.

The location and layout are often unfavourable, functioning family and neighbourhood support networks are increasingly rare, and there is a risk of withdrawal and isolation.

Assisted senior living addresses this problem. Independent living and independent household management are promoted against the background of the greatest possible security.

Assisted living offers

• a barrier-free and age-appropriate flat,
• a package of basic services (individual care and advice, arrangement of assistance and services, leisure activities, emergency call organisation) for which you pay a monthly basic flat rate,
• additional optional services (such as meal provision, flat cleaning, laundry service, transport service, caretaker services, outpatient care), which you can only use and pay for if required.

Assisted living in shared flats

The rooms in the shared flats are divided up so that there is both private and communal living space. By living together with other people, the shared flats enable more social and community contact and counteract isolation. At the same time, it is possible to retreat to one's own living space at any time.

If you want to live in your own four walls for as long as possible, you should make changes to your home at an early stage.

Often, small modifications or technical aids such as removing tripping hazards and barriers, installing grab rails or raising the bed are enough to adapt your home to your personal needs.

The manual and financial outlay for age-appropriate home adaptations is less than you might think for most changes. But even larger measures are worthwhile, especially as financial support is available under certain conditions. Adapting your home may even make a move to a retirement home unnecessary.

"My house is far too big for me and I would like some help."

Living for help - housing partnerships in Bocholt

This is how "Housing for Help" works. The new BBG project arranges housing partnerships between young and old. Students get an affordable room, while senior citizens get help with everyday life. What exactly living together looks like is discussed on an individual basis. It usually involves tasks such as mowing the lawn, going shopping, cooking together or similar.

Nursing or medical services of any kind are excluded.

Similar to a normal shared flat, it is also important for "Wohnen für Hilfe" that both parties get along well. BBG eG arranges the accommodation and advises both parties. However, the contractual partners are always the housing provider and the student.

"WOHNEN FÜR HILFE" is an initiative of the Bocholter Bürgergenossenschaft eG in cooperation with the General Student Committee of the Westfälische Hochschule.
