Start of the learning phase for AI traffic lights on Uhlandstraße
With the opening of the new cycle and footpath link from Schiffchen via Uhlandstraße to Aasee, the city of Bocholt has also put the new traffic light system into operation. Over the next four to six weeks, the system's artificial intelligence (AI) will create anonymised typical movement profiles of road users.
The movement and usage profiles are used to optimise the release times for the traffic light signals in order to enable cyclists and pedestrians to cross particularly quickly and safely.
During this traffic light teach-in phase, there may be temporary restrictions in the flow of traffic on Uhlandstraße, as the system is currently unable to recognise traffic jams.
The clearance times for pedestrians and cyclists crossing are currently still short, and cyclists still have to request their green light by pressing a button. The traffic lights will not be fully functional with automated clearance until the learning phase has been completed.
