Easter bonfire in Bocholt: Seven traditional bonfires on Easter Sunday

On Sunday, 20 April 2025, the traditional Easter bonfires will once again blaze in Bocholt. Seven public bonfires will be lit in the city area, organised by local associations, parishes and communities. The city of Bocholt and the fire brigade point out important safety rules and provide an overview of the event locations.

The lighting of Easter bonfires is a long-standing tradition in Bocholt, which will also be practised in many places this year on Easter Sunday. A total of seven traditional bonfires have been registered for 20 April 2025 in the city area. They are organised by associations, religious communities or organisations anchored in the local community and are open to everyone as public events. They therefore fulfil the criteria for traditional bonfires in accordance with the current case law of the Higher Administrative Court of North Rhine-Westphalia.

In addition to the symbolic character of the Easter bonfires, these events offer an opportunity to meet and celebrate together in the neighbourhood. They help to strengthen togetherness in the neighbourhood.

The city council and the fire brigade would like to remind everyone that all organisers must comply with legal safety regulations. These include keeping sufficient distance between the fire pits and buildings, trees and bushes, as well as refraining from lighting fires in strong winds. A portable fire extinguisher must be available at all times. It must also be ensured that the fire is supervised by at least two adult persons. These persons must be reachable by telephone and may only leave the fireplace when the fire and embers are completely extinguished. The city of Bocholt reserves the right to ban the burning of fires if the forest fire index rises.
