Bocholt funfair: weapons, dangerous objects and cannabis consumption prohibited

City of Bocholt tightens preventive security concept for major event from 18-21 October

The Bocholt funfair starts in a week's time on Friday. Up to half a million visitors are expected in the city centre from 18 to 21 October. In cooperation with the organisers and the police, the city of Bocholt has adapted the security concept for the major event in advance. The showmen welcome the move.

In the city centre and on the side square of the former fire station (An der Bleiche), a special prohibited zone will be designated from 18-21 October. Weapons and dangerous objects are prohibited within this area. In addition, cannabis may not be consumed at the funfair in Bocholt.

Increased presence of security forces

The security authorities will be patrolling with an increased presence, both in uniform and in civilian clothes. Random checks will be carried out and bags will also be checked. This was announced by the organisers, the city and the police at a press conference. In line with established practice, the German police will be supported by Dutch police, as experience has shown that numerous Dutch guests are expected at the Bocholt funfair.

Prevention and risk minimisation

By improving the security concept, the city administration is reacting to events that have occurred in other German cities when knife attacks took place at events. Organisers, the city and the police expressly emphasise that there are no indications of acute danger at the Bocholt funfair. The ban on carrying weapons and dangerous objects is preventative and minimises the risk.

The consumption of cannabis is also prohibited at the Bocholt funfair. According to the city of Bocholt, the health protection of children and young people, which is expressly required by the Cannabis Act, as well as other people, cannot be guaranteed in the dense crowds at the event.

People who violate the regulations must expect sanctions, such as fines or entry bans.

Signs at the entrance roads to the funfair will inform visitors of the stricter safety rules.

Showmen welcome safety rules

320 showmen and showwomen are currently setting up their carousels and stalls in Bocholt city centre. They also welcome the improved safety regulations, as spokesman Philip Traber emphasises. For example, the showmen and showwomen want to adjust their range of raffle prizes and the like and not hand out any items that give the appearance of a weapon or can be used as a weapon. A chat between the showmen and fairground organisers is a "short line" that ensures fast and efficient communication between them in the tried and tested manner.

Mayor: "As safe as possible"

"The funfair is the highlight of the year in Bocholt, a favourite among locals and many visitors alike - we know that from surveys. Even if there can never be absolute security: Those responsible do everything they can to make the Bocholt funfair as safe as possible and a carefree, great highlight for everyone", emphasises Bocholt's mayor Thomas Kerkhoff.
