1 May: City reminds of youth protection and announces controls

May tour? But the right way! // Responsible use of alcohol and tobacco

Just in time for 1 May, the city of Bocholt is appealing to parents, retailers and restaurants to deal responsibly with the issue of alcohol and tobacco consumption among young people. The city is also announcing checks to ensure compliance with youth protection regulations.

Experience shows that many young people are out and about on 1 May. In this context, the city of Bocholt reminds parents that they are obliged to fulfil their duty of supervision and talk to their children about alcohol, the dangers of addiction and its effects. Children and young people are often unaware of how harmful alcohol can be to their health, especially while they are growing up.

Under current youth protection regulations, alcoholic beverages may not be sold to or consumed by children and young people under the age of 16. High-proof alcoholic beverages such as spirits are only permitted from the age of 18. Persons of legal age who give alcohol to minors are also liable to prosecution. Similar rules apply to smoking: The consumption of any tobacco products or cannabis is only permitted from the age of 18.

On 1 May, the Department of Public Order will be more present and carry out checks. Retailers and the catering trade in particular are called upon to act responsibly: If there is any doubt as to the age, the ID should be checked. Alcohol and tobacco may not be sold to minors. In addition, at least one non-alcoholic drink must be offered at a lower price than the cheapest alcoholic drink in pubs and restaurants. The current Youth Protection Act and the corresponding regulations must be clearly displayed.

The city of Bocholt relies on the support of all those involved to ensure that alcohol and tobacco are handled responsibly on 1 May and that children and young people are protected.
