Young doctors visit Bocholt: Trainee doctors explore the city
Background: securing the next generation of doctors in the region // Cooperation between the town, doctors' network and Borken district
Since the beginning of September, a total of twelve medical students have been visiting the Borken district to complete a four-week clinical traineeship as part of their studies. Eight of them are taking part in the Westmünsterland Clinical Centre's summer camp and deepening their clinical skills at St. Agnes Hospital in Bocholt, while four others are gaining insights into working as GPs in general medical practices in the Borken district.
The city of Bocholt invited the medical students to a shared experience in Bocholt. In the summer evening atmosphere, the prospective doctors explored the historic city centre with Bocholt's night watchman Florian Sauret. In between, there were treats from the Bocholt catering trade.
Close cooperation between the city, doctors' network and Borken district
The students exchanged their experiences in the various departments. "The relaxed atmosphere contributed to the fact that not only professional but also personal discussions were held", reports Lisa Knuf, project coordinator for the city of Bocholt. She emphasises the importance of the good cooperation between the city, Klinikum Westmünsterland and the Borken district in supporting the students. Together with her colleagues Sarah Underberg (Ärztenetz BOHRIS e.V.), Yvonne Amshoff (KWML) and Regina Kasteleiner (Borken district), Knuf is committed to ensuring that the next generation of doctors are well looked after and feel comfortable.
Securing medical care in the countryside
The aim of the joint endeavours is to secure the next generation of doctors in the rural region of the Borken district. Family trainee programmes such as the "Summer Camp" and "Hand on Heart" are part of this strategy. Knuf: "Events such as the culinary night watchman tour help to familiarise medical students with the region and at the same time demonstrate the attractiveness of Westmünsterland as a possible future place to work and live." With success: two students recently visited Bocholt as part of the "Localhero" project. They have already successfully completed their GP traineeship.
