"International Women's Day" in Bocholt on 8 March with supporting programme
Cinema film "Suffragette - Deeds not Words" at the Kinodrom followed by a round of talks
8 March is "International Women's Day". To mark the occasion, the film "Suffragette - Deeds not Words" will be shown in Bocholt's Kinodrom. After the film, the political women's network Bocholt and the municipal equal opportunities commissioner Astrid Schupp invite you to a discussion. The film starts at 7 pm.
Tickets can be booked online (www.kinodrom.de, with film trailer) or at the box office.
Film plot
The film tells the story of women who fought for the right to vote and for women`s equality. In 1903, Emmeline Pankhurst founded the Women`s Social and Political Union in Great Britain, a bourgeois women`s movement that attracted attention in the following years through passive resistance as well as public protests up to and including hunger strikes. In addition to the right to vote, they fought for general equality for women and for things that are taken for granted today, such as smoking in public.
The so-called suffragettes were partly forced to go underground and play a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the increasingly brutal state. They were mostly working-class women who had found that peaceful protests were unsuccessful. In their radicalisation, they risked losing everything - their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives.
Talk session afterwards
After the film, those interested will have the opportunity to talk to Bocholt's local politicians and the city's Equal Opportunities Officer: Be it about the film and its contents, or about ways into politics and experiences as an active local politician.
About International Women's Day
On 8 March, attention is drawn worldwide to equal rights and women's rights. "On this day, we in Bocholt want to raise awareness of the fact that this also includes active political participation. It would be desirable if even more women got involved and became active in local politics, because this way the interests and issues of women would be more strongly perceived and taken into account in local events in Bocholt," emphasises the municipal equal opportunities commissioner Astrid Schupp.
