CITY CYCLING 2024: Winners from Bocholt accept prizes // St. Bernhard primary school wins the "School Cycling NRW" competition

Bocholt has achieved second place in the overall ranking for medium-sized towns (50,000 to 100,000 inhabitants) in the nationwide CITY CYCLING initiative. 3,013 active cyclists in 197 teams cycled for the city from Westmünsterland. The campaign was combined with a competition. The lucky winners have now received their prizes.

The fact that the bicycle has long been a popular means of transport in Bocholt and is virtually part of the mobile self-image of its citizens was not only revealed by a representative survey, but was also reflected once again in the CITY CYCLING competition. The people of Bocholt were once again very diligent and covered a total of 691,931 kilometres in 50,810 journeys.

In the overall ranking, Bocholt once again took second place in the CITY CYCLING competition behind the city of Rheine (703,000 kilometres). The previous year's figures, both in terms of the number of participants and kilometres cycled, were exceeded, reports Sascha Terörde from the city's Climate Protection Department. However, the 700,000 kilometre mark will probably have to be broken in order to take first place next year.

Three participants were rewarded with special prizes in the presence of Mayor Thomas Kerkhoff and the sponsors: Julius Tembrink covered 476.2 kilometres and won a bicycle from the Bocholt-based company ROSE BIKES. Second place went to a "Premium" solar balcony power station from Westmünsterland Solar. Third place went to Dirk Ebbing, who was delighted to receive a travel voucher worth 250 euros from Reisebüro Drachter.

The most successful teams were the Mariengymnasium with 59,660 kilometres, followed by the "Liebfrauen Bocholt" team with 42,152 kilometres and the open "Team Bocholt" with 35,041 kilometres.

St Bernhard School triumphed in the "School Cycling NRW" competition. With 175 kilometres per participant, it achieved the most kilometres of any primary school in the state competition, taking first place. Together with their parents and teachers, the pupils cycled a total of 13,472 kilometres, making them the second most successful cycling school in Bocholt. First City Councillor Björn Volmering presented the award in person to great cheers from the pupils.

16 city councillors from Bocholt also actively participated in CITY CYCLING this time, which earned Bocholt 3rd place among local councils in the category of cities with 50,000 to 100,000 inhabitants.

Nationwide, more than 1.1 million cycling enthusiasts from 2,886 municipalities covered a total of 218 million kilometres by bike - and avoided 36,000 tonnes of CO2 compared to car journeys.

Further information on the nationwide competition can be found at www.stadtradeln.de.
