Stumbling stone tour: city tour through Bocholt's history

Free places for Tuesday, 8 April // Guided tour free of charge

Next Tuesday, 8 April, the city of Bocholt invites you to a free tour of stumbling stones through the city of Bocholt. On the tour through the city, participants will learn a lot about the history of Jewish families in Bocholt and the crimes of the Nazi era.

On an alternative tour in the city centre along the Stumbling Stones, the places where Bocholt's Jewish residents were subjected to severe injustice are visited with explanations, as well as the memorial at the Bocholt synagogue.

Karl Hülskamp, a master carpenter who lived next to the synagogue, testified in 1948 in a preliminary investigation against Bocholt Nazis: "I ... went out of my flat to see what was going on outside. Among the people I saw the Standartenführer Wolff, whom I knew. I told him that he should stop the action immediately, otherwise I would press charges for arson. However, the synagogue had already been destroyed."

The event is part of the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) programme and is being held in cooperation with the Bocholt City Museum.

The tour starts at 5 pm and lasts around two hours. The meeting point is the Bocholt City Museum (Osterstraße 66). Registration for the free guided tour is possible via the VHS Bocholt-Rhede-Isselburg website.
