Who will be Bocholt's "Reading Queen" or "Reading King"?

Final of the reading competition at local level on Friday, 15 November, from 3 p.m. in the media centre of Bocholt City Library

This year's fourth grade reading competition will take place on Friday, 15 November at 3 pm in the media centre of Bocholt City Library. This year, 13 pupils from Bocholt's primary schools will be competing against each other to become the next reading king or queen.

"Reading aloud creates the future!" This is the motto of this year's nationwide Read Aloud Day on 15 November, which aims to inspire people to read aloud and draw attention to the importance of reading skills.

Bocholt City Library is looking forward to this day, on which the Leselöwen reading competition traditionally takes place. This year, 13 children will be taking part, having previously demonstrated their reading talent at their respective schools. They will now compete for the title of town reading king or queen. Family and friends are of course invited to listen to the stories and join in the excitement.

A jury with very different perspectives

The city library has once again been able to recruit various representatives from Bocholt's cultural and literary scene for the jury. The children's jury, made up of former winners, has also become an integral part of the programme. "We are delighted to have a very colourful mix of different culture-related areas on the jury", says Claudia Alders from the city library, "all of them have different experiences of reading and reading aloud, which is a good basis for the final decision."

Reading talent is in demand

On the day of the competition, the 13 participants will read aloud for three minutes from a text that they have selected and practised themselves. This allows them to show that they can read confidently, fluently and with the correct intonation. In the second round, the children are then presented with an unfamiliar text, which they must also master. Both rounds are then judged in order to determine the next town reading king or queen. The award ceremony for the first three places will then be presented by Mayor Thomas Kerkhoff.

The school winners who will compete for the title of City Reading King or Queen 2024 are
