Promoting media skills: gaming club receives donation

Bocholt City Library is delighted to receive a €1000 donation from the Volksbank Bocholt Foundation

The gaming club at Bocholt City Library has now received a donation of 1000 euros from the Volksbank Bocholt Foundation. The club consists of a fixed group of children who meet monthly to play games together and develop their media skills.

Together, the children discuss which games to buy and play and then take a critical look at them. Games are played on the PS5, the Switch or sometimes on a tablet. Participation in the gaming club is free of charge.

The focus is on cooperative gaming: "This promotes the social skills of the boys and girls in a playful way", says Bocholt's Head of Cultural Affairs Björn Volmering. Together with representatives of Bocholt's city library, he expressed his thanks for the donation from the Volksbank Bocholt Foundation.

"It is important to our board of trustees that the project is not just about gaming, but that the responsible use of digital media by pupils is also promoted", says Bernd Kleine-Rüschkamp from the Volksbank Bocholt Foundation.

"Of course, the Gaming Club also includes teaching the basics of media literacy", says Romina Raske from Bocholt City Library. She runs the regular gaming club together with her colleague Daniel Heisterkamp. For example, the young participants are also taught how to handle personal data correctly online, emphasises Raske.

"Gaming evenings" in the holiday programme

The city library also offers free "gambling evenings" as part of its holiday programme. Children and young people can experience the library in a special setting outside of regular opening hours. Problems are solved together and tips are exchanged, with a focus on media skills and co-operative gaming.
