Last guided tours on the history of the Stadtwaldlager in 2024
Dates in October // Participation free of charge // Online registration possible
This year, the city museum is once again offering free guided tours on the history of Bocholt's city forest camp. The Bocholt city forest camp bears witness to one of the most eventful chapters in Bocholt's history. Registration is still possible online for the last three dates this year.
As the site of the Austrian Legion, a prisoner of war camp during the Second World War, and its later use as a "Palestine Transit Camp", the site still tells stories of political events of the 20th century, of the lives of the people of Bocholt during the Second World War and its aftermath.
The Bocholt City Museum presented the history of the Stadtwaldlager with a major special exhibition in 2021. Guided tours of the former camp area were designed as part of this exhibition. This year, the city museum has already been able to guide many interested visitors through today's local recreation area and inform them about the eventful history.
The last regular dates for a guided tour this year are on 3 October and 13 October, both at 11 am.
Special offer:
For the first time since 2024, guided tours are also being offered specifically for children and young people aged between 10 and 14. A final guided tour this year will also be offered for them on 15 October at 12 noon.
Together with Werner Loock, you will follow in the footsteps of the eventful history of the camp. With the help of historical images and current scientific findings, life in and around the camp will be explained for its inmates and the Bocholters of the time.
A close look is taken at the first camp residents, National Socialists of the so-called Austrian Legion (1935-1938), as well as the living conditions of the numerous prisoners of war who were imprisoned in the Stadtwaldlager between 1939 and 1944.
All public tours are free of charge. However, advance bookings are requested. You can find more information about bookings or private tour enquiries under the attached QR code, on the homepage of the city museum or by calling 02871/953-2171.
