City history: With coffee and bread against the revolutionaries

Historical lecture on the 1848/49 revolution // Wednesday, 2 February, from 6.30 pm in the media centre // Bocholt city history discussion group invites you to attend

On Wednesday, 5 February, the city of Bocholt invites you to the Bocholt city history discussion group at the media centre (Hindenburgstraße 5) in Bocholt. The guest is the Bocholt-born historian Dr Henning Bovenkerk. His lecture "The revolution 1848/49. With coffee and bread against the revolutionaries" will focus on the role of individuals in the 1848/49 revolution. The event starts at 6.30 pm and admission is free.

The extent to which individuals were able to influence the events of the revolution is particularly evident away from the well-known centres. This becomes particularly clear in Bocholt: whether as a stormy insurgent or a victim of the revolutionary events - the events in and around Bocholt exemplify the possibilities and limits of individual persons. All the more so as the events in Bocholt were relatively brief but intense.

The lecture uses the events in Bocholt to explain how unusual means - such as coffee beans and sandwiches - were used to influence the revolutionary events. The role of the Bocholt lawyer and historian Friedrich Wilhelm Leopold Reigers as a chronicler between reappraisal and appropriation will be analysed.

Registration is possible at www.vhs-bocholt.de.
