The special film "Surf on, Europe!"

The city of Bocholt presents this documentary film, which impressively shows the social and political challenges in modern Europe. Using the example of three surfing enthusiasts in different countries with different stories, the obstacles and hopes are impressively brought to the screen. The "EUROPE DIREKT Bocholt" is a cooperation partner and offers the opportunity for a discussion after the film if interested.

Rosy lives in Derry (Northern Ireland) and travels across the nearby border to the Republic of Ireland to surf. As a teenager, only his passion for surfing saved him from being caught up in the violence of the Northern Ireland conflict. Now he wants to make a living building surfboards. But it's not easy - he's struggling with the economic and political uncertainty caused by Brexit.

In Biarritz (France), Margaux and her friends get together to organise Europe's first LGBTQ-friendly surf festival. "The sea doesn't discriminate against anyone", they say, and want to counter the stereotypes of the commercial surfing scene.

In Tarifa (Spain), Majid teaches kitesurfing. He longs to bring his wife and two children from Morocco to join him and is fighting against the restrictions imposed by the Spanish bureaucracy. Will he make it?

In over 4 years of production time, a film has been created that blurs the boundaries between surfing and socially critical documentary film and combines aesthetic imagery with raw, documentary insights into the lives of the protagonists.

The film lasts 92 minutes. It is presented in the original language with German subtitles. The film was directed by Constantin Gross and Lukas Steinbrecher.
