Lecture: The West's Modern Fear of the "Yellow Peril

Dr Peter Kreutzberger is, among other things, Chairman of the Alliance of German China Societies and was the German Consul General in ShenYang for many years. He studied economics, journalism and Chinese studies at the universities of Münster, Hamburg, BeiJing and NanJing. In recent years, he has been on an annual lecture tour through Germany. This year, the Wirtschaftsförderung Bocholt, Europe Direct Bocholt and the Deutsch-Chinesische Gesellschaft Bocholt e.V. succeeded in securing Mr.. Dr. Kreutzberger to give a lecture in Bocholt.

The lecture is about the change in the relationship between the West and China. After the end of the "Cold War", China seemed to be a grateful and constructive partner for the West. The world's largest market tempted foreign investors to expose themselves against all commercial caution. Today, Xi JinPing claims to be a world power and even claims the number one position based on China's development path.

Are politicians, the media and the public in the West reacting sensibly to China's change and claims by China-bashing? Are sanctions, obstructions of the further development process, geopolitical and military counter-offensives, the reduction of economic dependence, the pretence of missing Western values etc. appropriate measures and means for an understanding between China and the West? Is there no chance for dialogue forums, or would they come too late, and who bears responsibility for this? These are the core questions of Dr. Peter Kreutzberger's lecture.
