Sausage catch-up at the craft museum
On Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 February, the Bocholt Craft Museum is hosting a sausage-making event.
"Frau goat noa'n Schorsteen"
Sausage collecting is one of the most original surviving carnival customs in Münsterland and is probably much older than the Rhineland-influenced street carnival; the process is simple: people get together, go from house to house and sing a "Heischelied" (heischen is a form of begging). In Bocholt, this is clearly "Frau goat noa'n Schorsteen".
In return, you get small gifts. In the past, these were often foods that you were not supposed to eat after carnival during Lent until Easter and therefore had to be eaten quickly until Ash Wednesday, e.g. sausage, eggs, but also beer and schnapps.
Nowadays, very few people visit strangers to ask for sausage and eggs. That is why we would like to offer a meeting point for all fools who cultivate this custom at the Bocholt Crafts Museum, in the centre of the historic Fildeken district.
On Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 February, we would like to revive this tradition in the courtyard of the Bocholt Crafts Museum. From 11.11 a.m. to 6.00 p.m., everyone is welcome to stop off for a traditional sausage collecting session, wearing at least a cardboard nose as a disguise and ALL! verses of Frao goat noa'n Schorsteen. But don't worry: song sheets are also available.
Lyrics from "Frau goat noa'n Schorsteen"
Frau gaot nao'n Schorsteen, dor hangt de lange Worsten,
gew me de langen, un laot de korten mor hangen!
Woman, get me deet, woman, get me dat.
Woman, get me a piece of the poggenstatt!
Woman go to the egg nest, there lie the eggs, sit,
If I get the eggs, then let them stay for a while.
Woman, get me deet, woman, get me dat.
Woman, get me a piece of the poggenstatt!
Don't let me stay so long,
I still have to get another piece of cake!
Woman, win me deet, woman, win me dat.
Woman, get me a piece of the Poggenstatt!
