Intercultural week with a colourful and varied programme

Intercultural Week is taking place in Bocholt from 20 to 27 September. The programme includes a total of ten events organised by many different organisations.

Intercultural Weeks have been taking place in Germany at the end of September since 1975. Over 600 cities and municipalities now take part in this initiative. Bocholt has been a regular participant since 2014. This year, there is a compact programme in the week from 20 to 27 September.

Motto: "New rooms"

"It is a colourful and varied offer that we have put together in several meetings with cultural associations and organisations in Bocholt", says Caroline Blenker from the Caritas Association Bocholt at the presentation of the programme. Together with the Integration Office of the City of Bocholt, the Family Education Centre Bocholt (FABI), the Adult Education Centre Bocholt-Rhede-Isselburg and other associations, schools and initiatives, the Caritas Association is the organiser and host of this intercultural week, which this year once again has the motto "New Spaces".

"This motto can be understood in many different ways", says the patron of Intercultural Week 2024, Rosina Giorgio. "New spaces" in the heart, in the mind, but also literally new spaces in a building". The motto should invite people to gain new ideas and impressions, to open, design, use or enter new spaces.

The motto can be understood in many different ways. "New rooms" in the heart, in the mind, but also literally new rooms in a building.

Rosina Giorgio, Patron

"This year - and this is my personal intention in particular - we have succeeded in getting several associations and organisations to work together on an event", reports Bruno Wansing, Integration Officer for the city of Bocholt.

For example, seven organisations were involved in the tea and coffee festival on 25 September. "This makes us very happy, as it means that intercultural dialogue is already directly involved in the preparation of the events", emphasises Wansing.

Intercultural Week 2024 will open on 20 September with the World Children's Day Festival. The event will be held at St. Josef Gymnasium (Kapu) from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. "A colourful stage programme and lots of great creative and exercise activities await young and old alike, which can be used free of charge", according to the announcement.

On the same evening, as a kind of midnight tournament, an intercultural football tournament will take place for the second time. In contrast to last year, the venue and format have changed. On the one hand - in keeping with the IKW motto - the game will be played in the new open-air hall on the TuB Bocholt grounds.

The competition is open to young people aged between 16 and 25, boys and girls. The format alone ensures that there will be a colourful picture. The young people aged 16 - 25, who register in advance with Bruno Wansing(bruno.wansing(at)bocholt(dot)de) or Gül Balci(cansu77(at)gmx(dot)de), will be drawn by lot into different teams in the evening, which will then compete against each other.

"This will bring young people together in a team who may not even have seen each other before, it will be just as colourful as Bocholt is", hopes Bruno Wansing. The draw will take place at 10 pm, kick-off for the first game is at 10.30 pm. Jusina e.V., the Afghan community, the Turkish Parents' Association, TuB Bocholt, EWIBO and the Integration Office have organised the tournament. "It's less about sporting success and more about playing sport together, having fun and engaging in dialogue", continues Wansing.

On Saturday, the Fildeken-Rosenberg neighbourhood continues in the afternoon, when the association Tür-an Tür e.V. with the neighbourhood development and Jusina e.V. offers portrait painting for the whole family with coffee and cake in the OGS of Biemenhorster Grundschule, Weserstraße, from 2 pm to 5 pm.

"New rooms" is also the name of the game in the evening, when the Centro Cultural Espanol, the Italian Cultural Association and the VHS and Integration Office invite you to a Spanish-Italian-German evening in the Lernwerk's event hall from 7 pm. "This is really new territory for us because we have never used the hall for such a large event before", says Fatma Boland from the VHS. Registrations can be made via the VHS.

There will be a "Grillen der Nationen" on Sunday, 22 September 2024, 5 - 8 pm. With the participation of the German-Chinese Society Bocholt, the German-Syrian Association, Ditib Bocholt - Turkish-Islamic Community of Bocholt e.V., Ahmadiyya Community, Afghan Community and the Kurdish Association, the barbecue at the Lernwerk will be intercultural and international. With a view of the Bocholter Aa, a wide variety of delicacies will be offered for consumption at numerous barbecue stations, inviting you to think outside the box. Registration via the VHS is required for this event.

"Baking in traditional dress and games for adults" will take place on Tuesday, 24 September. The "Leben im Alter" association and the Quartierstreff invite you to the St. Georg parish hall from 1 - 4 pm.

Tea and coffee festival at Benölkenplatz

On Wednesday, 25 September, from 6 to 9 p.m., the tea and coffee festival - with compote - will take place in the canteen on Benölkenplatz. The German-Syrian Association, the Ahmadiyya Community, the German-British Society, the Afghan Hazara German Community Bocholt, the Italian Cultural Association (Bocholter Associazione Culturale Italiana e.V. ), the Eritrean Cultural Association and the EWIBO will be presenting specialities from their respective countries. British Tetleys Tea meets strong Syrian coffee, Italian espresso meets Afghan Chaye Sia. People from Eastern Europe will also be there to present their "compot".

Albrecht von Lucke will be in action twice on Thursday, 26 September 2024. The part in the Rheder Ei will be open to the public when he brings both domestic and foreign policy into the evening (admission is from 6.30 pm) at the end of the district-wide first voter project in order to put current political events and happenings relating to the Borken district into a wider context. What impetus is needed to ensure that the Borken district is well represented in the federal, local and, in particular, integration council elections in September 2025? The keynote speech will be followed by a moderated discussion. The evening will end with a cosy get-together. Catering will be provided.

The intercultural week will conclude on 27 September at 7 pm in the Lernwerk event hall with an intercultural literature and music festival. Bocholt artists with and without an international family history will read aloud and make music on this evening, captivating the audience with their colourful and entertaining performances. Erza Halili, Katharina Giesing and Nélia de Sá, three pupils from the Mariengymnasium, will be taking part.

Multi-instrumentalist Moses Breuer performs in a variety of genres. Guests can look forward to an international repertoire ranging from Brazilian bossa nova to Japanese folk songs. When two passionate musicians come together, a very special magic is created that casts a spell over the audience.

This will be the case with Tetiana and Tatiana. Outta Basement is the name of a newly founded formation consisting of Simon Halwaß (vocals+piano), Matthias Wigger (drums+vocals), Selin Özdemir (cello) and William Al Akrad (acoustic guitar). During the interval and after the official part, there will be an opportunity to chat over finger food and drinks. Admission is free.
