Jewish culture in Europe - how it once was and how it is today

On 12 January, a lecture on Jewish culture in Europe will take place in the Appendix of the Lernwerk from 11 am. Moderated by Jochen Leyhe, Eliah Sakakushev-von Bismarck and Britta Shulamit Jakobi will meet for a discussion, accompanied by musical contributions from the duo Benjamin Pfordt (piano) and Margarita Cherenkova (saxophone).

Eliah Sakakushev-von Bismarck is the director of Villa Seligmann, a centre for the exploration of Jewish cultural heritage and the performance of Jewish music in Hanover. He has also been the director and initiator of various chamber music festivals in Germany, Spain and his native Bulgaria. After stints in Vienna and Mannheim, engagements have also taken him to Brazil and New Zealand.

Britta Shulamit Jakobi is an actress, director and speaker who has worked for ARD and ZDF, among others. She is the founder of rimon productions for theatre, readings, radio plays and video. The content focus on Jewish topics in politics and society is linked to the objective of highlighting grievances in thinking, reporting and acting towards the Jewish community, for example in Europe.

The musician and the musician

Benjamin Pfordt studied music education, history and Protestant religious education in Münster and Nijmegen. He also studied organ at the Münster University of Music. During his master's degree, he composed the mono-opera "Recordings of a Madman", which premiered in 2019. His organ work "Nyanyian Panakawan" was awarded the 2020 Carl von Ossietzky International Composition Prize. He conducted the Peace Concert in Münster on 7 October 2024, which was held to mark the anniversary of the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel.

Margaria Cherenkova studied in Nizhny Novgorod and Münster. She is the artistic director of the aStella Trio from Münster and the duo ConBrio. In 2023, she performed in the Berlin Philharmonie and at the Peace Festival at the Brandenburg Gate.
