City of Bocholt welcomes decision on cycle highway
Ministry: Cycle highway to run over disused railway line
The city of Bocholt welcomes the decision of the NRW Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport (MUNV NRW) to route the planned RS2 cycle highway along the former railway line between Bocholt and Rhede.
The decision strengthens the decision of Bocholt City Council in favour of developing the cycle route. "We are delighted with this clear signal in favour of the fast cycle route", said Mayor Thomas Kerkhoff on Wednesday. This provides planning security for the next steps towards the expansion of the cycle route.
The section between Bocholt via Rhede to Borken is part of the RS2 cycle route, which is to run between Isselburg and Coesfeld in future. The cycle highway not only complements the regional cycle tourism offer, it also makes the bicycle a real alternative to the car for commuters. "A real gain for the cycling city of Bocholt", says Kerkhoff.
In September 2021, the Bocholt City Council decided by a narrow majority in favour of building the first section between Berliner Platz and Bahnhofstraße in Rhede.
