Symbolic customs barrier in Suderwick dismantled for safety reasons for the time being
The symbolic customs barrier in the centre of the Bocholt district of Suderwick, reminiscent of the times of controlled border traffic between Germany and the Netherlands, has been dismantled for security reasons.
The condition of the red and white former boundary beam has deteriorated. Rust is gnawing away at the bracket, and wind and weather have taken their toll on the top of the barrier, which was last used as an upright flagpole. It was no longer stable.
The city of Bocholt has therefore decided to dismantle the barrier and put it into storage. The town has informed the Suderwick local history association. It is being examined whether restoration of the barrier is an option.
