Blue-green algae: Swimming ban in the Aasee

Bathing and swimming in Bocholter Aasee is prohibited with immediate effect. This is due to bacteria caused by blue-green algae. They can cause health hazards for humans and animals. The swimming ban applies until further notice. All contact with the water should be avoided.

The latest water samples confirm increased algae formation in the lake. The city puts up signs warning that swimming is prohibited. Sports involving direct contact with the water, such as stand-up paddling or surfing, are also prohibited. However, boating and other leisure activities are still permitted.

This does not only apply to the bathing bay. The administration also advises caution in other areas of the lake and recommends avoiding contact with the water.

Dog owners who go for a walk at Lake Aa should keep an eye on their pets and keep them away from the water. They could fall ill and, in the worst case, die due to a possible toxic effect of the bacteria.

As the growth of blue-green algae is dependent on temperature and precipitation, it is currently not possible to say how long the closure will last. The lake is continuously monitored by the city of Bocholt using water samples. The bathing season began in May and officially ends on 13 September.
