City tour along the "Stumbling Stones"

Tuesday, 12 December, 5 pm at the City Museum // Participation free of charge

The city of Bocholt invites you to a guided historical tour of Bocholt's city centre on Tuesday, 12 December, from 5 pm. Participation is free of charge. The meeting point is at the city museum in Osterstraße.

The route leads along so-called "Stumbling Stones" - memorial stones set into the pavement that commemorate the fate of Bocholt residents who were systematically persecuted, murdered, deported and expelled during the National Socialists' reign of terror after Hitler seized power in 1933. In addition to prominent sites, the memorial at the Bocholt synagogue is also part of this themed tour. The city tour is led and commented on by the director of the city museum, Lisa Resing, and the cultural manager of the city of Bocholt, Oliver Brenn. Archived reports from contemporary witnesses of the time bring history back to life at the original locations where the events took place.

Such as the one about the master carpenter Karl Hülskamp, who lived next door to the synagogue. In 1948, he testified in a preliminary investigation against Nazis from Bocholt: "I ... went out of my flat to see what was going on outside. Among the people I saw the standard bearer Wolff, whom I knew. I said to him that he should stop the action immediately, otherwise I would press charges for arson.
