Remembrance Day 9 November
Commemoration of the destruction of the Bocholt synagogue
On 9 November 1938, 86 years ago, synagogues were set on fire and destroyed in numerous cities in what was then the German Reich. The synagogue in Bocholt was not spared either: the interior was vandalised and damaged, and the building could no longer be used as a place of worship.
To commemorate the victims of the November pogroms, a memorial event will be held on Saturday, 9 November 2024. We invite all citizens to come together at 7.30 pm at the memorial to the desecrated synagogue on the forecourt of the Haus des Handwerks, Europaplatz 17.
Following the commemorative event, the musical reading "Jeder weitere Grausamkeit ein weiteres Stück Liebe entgegensetzten" will take place at 8.30 pm in the LernWerk event hall under the direction of Dr Norbert Fasse. Using excerpts from diaries, the reading will focus on the fate of Westerbork prisoners, a so-called police transit camp for Jews, in which Bocholt residents were also imprisoned. Admission is free!
