Exemption from the organic waste bin
Info on home composting
Anyone who composts organic waste on their own property can be exempted from the organic waste bin. Those who wish to do so must fulfil the corresponding requirements:
- All organic waste produced on the property, including garden waste, lawn clippings and kitchen waste, must be composted on the property.
- Composting takes place either in an open windrow and/or in a commercially available thermal composter. Composting sites must be of an appropriate size for the size of the plot.
- The compost must be recyclable on the property.
Once you have applied, a member of the ESB staff will make an appointment with you to check that the requirements have been met.
What does an ideal composter look like?
You can get thermal composters in any well-stocked garden centre. Please also ask there for advice on the appropriate size and location.
Can I continue to use the recycling centre for my garden waste?
Since you no longer pay organic waste fees when you are exempt from the organic waste bin, you no longer need to use the recycling centre for garden waste. When applying, please bear in mind that really all organic waste can be composted on your own property. This also applies to tree and shrub cuttings, lawn cuttings, scarifying waste and leaves.
