The Reader
Theatre in the evening
Modern classic by Bernhard Schlink, performed by the Landestheater Castrop-Rauxel.
At the end of the 1950s, 15-year-old Michael meets 36-year-old Hanna. From initial excitement and an unexpected act of love, a relationship develops that characterises them both for decades. Michael regularly reads to Hanna from the works he is studying at school or that she suggests to him. He becomes her reader and she becomes the authority on which he orients himself. But suddenly she disappears. Years later, when he is sitting as a law student in a war crimes trial, he discovers Hanna. She is one of the defendants. He realises that she is illiterate and could not have committed the crime she is accused of. Michael could intervene and save her, but he does nothing.
