Local elections in the Lithuanian twin town of Akmene
There is a new mayor in the Lithuanian twin town of Akmene. On Sunday, 5 March 2023, the previous mayor Vitalijus Mitrofanovas was re-elected. He received 66 percent of the votes. The election victory of the Lithuanian Social Democrats in Akmene secured them 15 seats in the local council.
Mayor Thomas Kerkhoff congratulated his Lithuanian counterpart on his re-election.
Local elections in Lithuania
Local elections were held in Lithuania on 5 March 2023. According to the country's Central Election Commission, 48.94 percent of eligible citizens participated. This is the highest turnout in Lithuanian local elections in the last 20 years.
Results for Akmene
In Akmene, the incumbent mayor and Social Democrat Vitalijus Mitrofanovas won after the first round of voting and thus retains his office. The Social Democrats thus have the majority with 15 seats. The Lithuanian Farmers' and Greens' Union follows with five seats. The Liberal Movement won three seats, while the Conservatives won two.
Nationwide election results
Overall, the Social Democrats led in the election with 18 per cent of all votes. The Home Union, or Lithuanian Christian Democrats, followed with 16 per cent of the votes cast. They currently form the Lithuanian government. Lithuania's largest opposition party, the Lithuanian Peasants' and Greens' Union, received nine percent of the vote. The Liberal Movement got seven percent.
