Diva.Power.Courage - Comedic music theatre

About the divas of the early 20th century // Saturday, 28 September, from 8 pm at LernWerk Bocholt // Admission free

On Saturday, 28 September, the Department of Culture and Education of the City of Bocholt invites you to a comedic musical theatre about the divas of the early 20th century. The event starts at 8 pm in the event hall of the LernWerk Bocholt, Industriestraße 1. Admission is free.

To what extent were German divas opinion-makers in the 1930s and 1940s? Why did some allow themselves to be instrumentalised by those in power and others did not? Does the degree of moral integrity influence the value of artistic creation?

Christiane Hagedorn (vocals), Martin Scholz (piano) and Dieter Kuhlmann (bass) explore these and other questions without moralising and present a musical and comedic evening about four extraordinary women who became icons for millions between the pandemic, economic crisis and world war and who wanted to be one thing above all else in the storm of history: Artists.

Christiane Hagedorn not only sings their songs with a multi-faceted voice and a fine musical instinct, but also lets each of them have their say. Subtly sketched in small scenes and based on original quotes from interviews and memoirs, the audience is given a comprehensive impression of the ladies. With Martin Scholz and Dieter Kuhlmann, Hagedorn not only has two virtuoso musicians and acting partners at her side.

Criticism

"Rousing and ambivalent: Christiane Hagedorn sang her way into the hearts of the enthusiastic audience with a colourful voice and presented a rousing insight into the thoughts and feelings of Marika Rökk, Zarah Leander, Marlene Dietrich and Claire Waldorff. [...]. In this way, the audience experienced four different divas with their very individual habitus. [...]. This evening certainly broadened the perspective on the four artists. You learnt some details that were often kept secret after the end of the war." (Westfälische Nachrichten)
